Club secretary Rita Krank received the
Rotarian of the Year Award
at the June 29 awards presentation and officers crossover. Rita works behind the scenes to support the Dickinson club by keeping track of all sorts of information and keeping the club organized. Rita is a Paul Harris Fellow (+6!) and has been a member of the Dickinson Rotary Club since the summer of 2006. Six months after she joined, she was appointed club secretary!

“I had become aware of Rotary's involvement in the International Service Guatemalan school building project in early 2006,” Rita says. “The power point of Dickinson Rotarians working gave me something to think about. I realized how much could be accomplished in that country in a short period of time very reasonably. I could assist with that. Feedback on how funds are used is important and the teams provide information and photos in a timely fashion.”
Rita is also a member of the Pancake Karnival, International Service, Dickinson Charitable Foundation, Club Archives and Armed Forces Day committees.

Congratulations, Rita!

Dickinson Rotary Club continues to support Rotary projects in Guatemala. This year it the project was the El dormido abril. Beanie Babies were also collected and distributed to the students.

Because the Dickinson Rotary Club believes strongly in the importance of vocational education and its contribution to the workforce, it sponsors a $700 scholarship to a student who wants to pursue a non-baccalaureate degree in vocational technical education.  Andrew Wipf, right, a Dickinson High School senior, received the $700 Dickinson Rotary Club Vocational Scholarship from Committee Chair Jon Hodnefield, left. Andrew has been accepted for the summer climb classes at Bismarck State College and plans to pursue a career as an electrical lineworker. He has worked three summers for Slope Electric and plans to continue to live in North Dakota. We certainly needed the linemen these past winters when we had so much bad weather and people were without power. He is the son of Luella and Rogfer Wipf.

Dickinson’s Armed Forced Day celebration was led by the Rotary Club, with North Dakota Gov. Jack Dalrymple as speaker and the Dickinson High School Band providing special patriotic music. More than 165 people, including all service clubs, current service members and veterans,
attended the noon celebration.

The Dickinson Rotary Club held a Pancake Karnival Sept. 26 to benefit PolioPlus™ and our club’s $2,500/year over 3 years contribution to the $200 Million Challenge. Last year, the club paid the funds out of the budget. This year, past DG Jim Ozbun organized a Pancake Karnival for the entire community that coincided with Dickinson State University’s homecoming festivities. The event was held in the new Badlands Activities Center on the DSU campus.

The club served pancakes, sausage and beverages from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Excess sausage was sold and 70 pounds of sausage was donated to the Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Center for meals for shelter residents. Net proceeds from the event exceeded $5,000, thanks to awesome publicity, donations, volunteers and ticket sales. Special guest at the event was past DG David Fihn, District 5580 PolioPlus™ chairman.
